Every now and then, a different camera finds its way into my bag. If you’ve been following along for a while, you may have noticed a few square black and white photos popping up in recent galleries. Those images come from my 1963 Rolleiflex, and they’ve become one of my favorite ways to approach film photography for Las Vegas elopements. It’s not something I advertise as an add-on or promise with every session. It’s simply a camera I love bringing along when the location feels special, the couple appreciates film, or the day calls for something a little unexpected!
Why I Sometimes Bring My Rolleiflex for Film Photography for Las Vegas Elopements
I’ll be honest, I just think it’s so cool that a camera built in 1963 still gets to document modern love stories. Every time I load a roll of film into my Rolleiflex, it feels like giving a piece of history one more chance to make something beautiful. That’s part of what I love about film in general. Every camera has its own personality, and this one sees the world a little differently than anything else I own. There’s something special about photographing a Las Vegas elopement in 2026 with a camera that’s been around for over six decades. It reminds me that good photographs aren’t about chasing the newest gear. They’re about preserving a moment in a way that still feels honest years from now.
What Makes Medium Format Film So Different?
The Rolleiflex shoots medium format film, which is different from the 35mm film I use for every elopement. Instead of 36 frames, each roll gives me just 12 square photographs. Knowing there are only twelve opportunities changes the pace completely. Every frame is intentional. Every click of the shutter matters. The negatives themselves are also much larger, which creates an incredible amount of detail and a subtle depth that’s difficult to describe until you see it. There’s almost a three-dimensional quality to medium format film. It doesn’t scream for your attention, it just has this quiet richness that pulls you in. I usually load the camera with black and white film because I love how timeless it feels, but every now and then I’ll shoot color too. Either way, the photographs have a character that’s entirely their own.
Why Film Photography for Las Vegas Elopements Slows Everything Down
One of my favorite parts about using this camera has nothing to do with the final photographs. It’s what happens while I’m making them. Most people have never seen a waist-level camera before, let alone one built in the early ’60s. Couples are always curious. They ask about it, peek through the viewfinder, and usually laugh when they realize I’m looking down into the camera instead of through it. It naturally becomes part of the experience rather than just another piece of gear.
Because the Rolleiflex only gives me twelve frames, it also encourages everyone, including me, to slow down. We aren’t rushing to make dozens of nearly identical images. We wait for the moments that feel right. The quiet glance before a laugh, a breeze catching a veil, the few seconds after your ceremony when it finally sinks in that you’re married. Those are the kinds of moments this camera seems to love.
